I am here at my desk, cleaning and purging papers and mail and junk and old receipts. I read a blog post recently that unofficially declared Black Friday as “Black Bag Friday”. The day is to be spent cleaning out the excess in your home and putting it in a black trash bag. This fresh custom is in lieu of going bonkers at stores acquiring more stuff. I loved that idea and I subconsciously declared the whole month of December a Black Bag Month. The antithesis to the commercialized Christmas season. I am not a stooge, I love the Christmas season. But remember, there was NO ROOM at the inn in Bethlehem. Maybe they needed a Black Bag Friday. I say all this to say that I am taking the time to unsubscribe to many of the superfluous emails I get. Though emails don’t take up physical space, they take up mental and visual space and create fatigue in both arenas. So now checking my email is meaningful. Time well spent. There are other things we need to unsubscribe from. Other people’s issues AND your own issues! Again, they don’t take up physical space, but it mentally and chronologically it drains you. There is a God who likes to subscribe to those issues. And he transforms by the renewing of your mind. But you have to cancel those issues. In a way, this is how we best celebrate the Christmas season: by making sure we have mental and chronological room at our “inn” for Jesus.
